All done in terms of grid-fill, but I can't make any sense of my 4-letter answer to 4ac - I'm not clear what its definition is, even.

The answer/entry is the Flemish name for the six-letter word in the clue.

In which cells does the decagon start and end?

I understand the theme and have identified some of the items, are some not in straight lines?

I have the cryptic representation but am completely stumped by the definition and decagon.

Now I see it! I was never much cop at maths but isn't it a dodecagon?

It’s a decagon, planks. Ten sides. Bananabean, the start and finish are in column 12. And the word “within” in the preamble is surely intended to mean that none of the cells spelling out the definition are used in any of the nine (different) words of a kind

I must have something wrong as my shape has twelve sides?

It should be 34 cells in length, and all sides are horizontal or vertical. Also, all the nine words of a kind are in straight horizontal or vertical lines

The decagon comprises the first 9 words of the 9th definition of the term in question in the BRB
