Re 23d - Yes, it is hidden.

Re 18a - 9 letter word for 'draws breath' with the first 2 letters removed (since fleeing)

6d. relates to musical notation.
A word for 'little' + word for 'note'

18a definition is raiders.

Last one which evades me - 4d "penny fills black pudding, which emits gases" (3, 4) ?E? P?P? Second word must be pipe but I cannot for the life of me think of a 3 letter word that makes a two word phrase to fit the clue! Help!

BAGLady, you just need a three-letter word meaning 'black' before your 'pipe'.

I found that one obscure too, but there is a 3-letter word that means "black" - think Whitby!
