Glad we could help, Manu. The G one is in Chambers - and that's the recommended dictionary, specified in the preamble.

I know, but I've never owned a Chambers. I'm sure there are libraries in France where I can get it, or I'll have to buy it on my next trip to the UK. But so far I've managed quite well without it, so it may be a few more years before I actually get one ha ha

Thanks, Manu. I mentioned the Chambers just to show that the word wasn't that obscure really. Do you do any of the crosswords that give Chambers as a prize? That'd be the ideal solution!

I'm having a different problem. I can't work out the subject from the surplus letters (not essential I know).
Could somebody help me by pointing to the extraneous letters in the first two across clues? Also is the answer a Latin word for the species or is it connected with the poem>

Any advice appreciated.

Williamseal, the surplus letters just lead to the Latin name. There's an F in the first clue, and as shown here earlier, an A in the second.
