Thanks uncle w :-) Also, I think it was immediately possible to assign values to A and D simply by inspection of their clues with reference to the lengths of those clues' grid entries and the knowledge that no entry starts with zero and that the smaller values were unavailable.

Hi all. Not posted for a while. Dont usually attempt the numericals but am having a crack at this. Could somebody please confirm or otherwise that R = 8; T =9; D=10. If not I’ll have to give this one up. Many thanks.

Goshawk, all correct. Let me know if you get any further with "In clue order...……".

Ah thanks uncle w. That’s a relief. Will press on. Have only tentatively started to fill grid in top left corner but came to halt. Will be in touch hopefully. Thanks again.

If you have found all the letter values but are struggling to fill the grid, these two observations should help a lot:

a) Since the 2nd digit of the entry at 1acr can only be 1 or 4, the first digit of the answer to 2dwn cannot go in row 1.

b) If the 3rd digit of the answer to 35acr were the 3rd digit of the entry, that would force 23d which in turn would force the final digits of the entries for 29acr and 33acr resulting in an impossible situation for 24dwn.

On holiday so just as well this was fairly straightforward. The wife does not allow me as much time for puzzles when we travel.
I have an inserted digit for both entries in the cross of 32 and 21 which seems contrary to the preamble. It seems to be correct though.
I do not return until after the deadline for submission so if you have not submitted yet and you would be prepared to submit a photo of mine with yours I will be very grateful.

My entry has gone in Smithsax so can you please give the full clues for those two as it looks like you have a slight error there.

I have 11 inserted at the last two cells of the across clue and 10 inserted in the last 2 cells of the down clue. The crossing cell contains a 1 from both insertions.

Hi again. I have filled the grid but must have made a mistake somewhere since I cannot make sense of the instruction: In clue order...... My first 4 letters corresponding to the inserted numbers are AHLL which cannot lead to anything meaningful. Back to the drawing board I think!
