Instead of upset, worried would have gotten me there faster.
Chambers does give star as the meaning of the 5 letter answer.

It was murder for a while as the title suggests.

The only clue I have not been able to parse is 34a.
How Samson turns into a 6 letter Indian savory snack is not clear.

Excellent puzzle.

30 down drew another huge doh when I saw it - pretty clever of The Ace Of Hearts to chuck that in I thought.

I shall have another look at The Listener this afternoon - didn't get beyond the preamble on Friday evening.

I came to this very late, have enjoyed the challenge but am stuck on 35a: I dealt with frames of Italian art, 1600-1700 (7).
