9d Eighth earl in NSW struck oil there (4) NE?S news??
34a American's regular series of calls having lost line-out ultimately (4) RO?E

2d Filling to the brim not following for tavern making good losses (6)
I "think" the answer is ULLAGE but I can't see how the clue works and which word is extra?
16a EGON ... is that a rare scottish word for a sore head or am i on the wrong track??

16 I have Enow - En, nut =Ow, that's sore.

34 Is thematic (I think!)

2 Ulling, Fulling, filling to the brim, without the F (not following). It means 'making good losses'. I think Tavern was the extra word.

Hi xwordfan,
9d [eighth], unusual definition of "oil", earl the usual "e"
34a thematic, (line-ou)t involved in wordplay
2d [tavern] f (following) removed from synonym of fill(ING), not ullage.

I don't have the puzzle in front of me so can't comment on 16a without the clue.

Hi malone, your reply wasn't there when I started my one finger typing.

Thanks, Ginge, that sometimes happens to me - my two-fingered typing isn't speedy!

I have a full grid but am struggling with the final 'word search'. A pointer as to where to look would be much appreciated.

The speaker is horizontal, formed from adjoining letters in several answers. (PS I looked for a word that could have a colour attached to it, that helped me.)

Thank you for that Malone. I have just flicked through both the ODQ and my copy of the work in question after a false start thinking I had 34 across wrong.
