&lit ish with the definition "inland" coming from your "Chambers"; Merriam-Webster.
Ice starts melting = "kill" the first letters and anagrind.

I liked all of them. Especially nice touches were paul’s “student consumption” @4 and penda’s nifty “refs threw a funny one” @24. I loved kt’s gem @2 and ginge’s “after thaws” with its brilliantly innovative construction @21, but must go with mattrom’s lovely succinctness @6:
