Very many thanks for your votes chrise, skyewalker, aristo, kt17 & Paul and the mention mattrom, cheers fiery.

@ chrise: at the risk of boring everyone, yourself included, this one fell into place by luck rather than the usual lots of effort/trial and error. The fodder "difficult" letters were y, f, b, r X2, and p & d in terms of the total number of letters. Fly (with off or away as anagrind) would get rid of the f & y so I started thinking of birds and robin came to mind. I then played around with pidgeon for about half an hour and couldn't put a coherent surface together. I then tried partridge and (s)tarling jumped out, so by pluralising them all that was left to do was tag on a subtraction indicator and definition. Good luck most definitely this time.

Sounds like hours of work, ginge - you undersell yourself!

Thanks for taking the time to explain.

Apologies Ginge I'm normally able to post the prize on a Saturday but there is scaffolding up doing needy repairs, if the Mitchell is open Monday I'll post the prize then.
It was going to be a track from the new Pixies album "Beneath the Eyrie"
If anyone is interested they can check it out
