Aristo, Interesting question - we certainly have 'giving/getting the bird' as a hiss in the theatre, and we have 'flipping the bird' as an Americanism, I think.

But bird is not defined as such in Chambers, the OED or even Partridge's Dictionary of Slang; nor in these as 'flipping the bird'.
