Thanks Peter, I solved this last night and got the answer fairly quickly, but would never have parsed it without your explanation. Thanks again.

Well, I'm all at sea. I can't decide if it's me (I'm very tired today) or Paul, especially after last week's easy one. I've got a few, not including 1 etc.

Can I have a hint for 17,19 One eaten by cannibal, due to ordering human takeaway? (5,9) I have ?L??? ?B???T???

A hint for 23ac may also help. Comic admits funny intro beaten (4,4)

I have ?R?? ???L

I shall have another go at 1etc. now

23 A usual three-letter word for funny (as in 'odd') inside a five-letter word for 'comic' (adjective). The definition is the last two words.

17, 19 - little green men, in a spaceship, might be involved! There's some anagramming (ordered) involved, the definition is at the end.

Hi Malone

Thanks for your hints. I got 23ac and some others, though 17,19 took me some time.

I still have many to do in the top half. I was watching Spiral. I'll give it until midnight.

Had a bit of a run once I revisited David W's hint about Churchill and Russia, which I looked up. Just two left and a number I'm not sure about, but time for bed.

Thanks for all your help everyone.

My problems are at the bottom. I have no idea about 29ac: My house accommodates an unknown knave. ?Y ?I?G? Then I have an answer for 22d: Cap in deference then certainly lifted -- like this?. ?O?F?D . The last 3 letters would come from Deference reversed but I don't know what the first 3 would come from. How does Certainly fit in? Finally 24ac, Becoming rotten though not in the middle -- an old cracker? I have T?R?N? I'll print the Everyman while I wait for you all to wake up in GMT.

29a Definition is an exclamation. A word for a game around a letter for an unknown + one for a knave in cards.

22d. First letter (cap) of deference + a slang abbreviation for 'certainly', reversed (lifted)

24a The 'old cracker' is a person who worked with codes.

Thank you Mattrom for being awake and of help. The slang for Certainly was very hard for me to see. And the code maker as well. I'm happy to have cracked Paul's!
