I'm sorry if I didn't explain it very well, but it's difficult without giving the game away completely. You need to look at the first part of the clue, up to the ?, and ignore punctuation and spacing. You will see an indefinite article followed by a 4-letter word that is a synonymous with the first 6-letter word of the answer. This word is enveloped by an indefinite article followed by a 7-letter word which is synonymous with last 6-letter word of the answer. The second synonym is pretty obscure (at least, it is to me). The answer in the grid describes, literally, how the first part of the clue is constructed. I hope that helps but I agree that the whole thing is over-elaborate.
