Thanks, syzygy, what a delight this was! I tutted at some of the simple answers, until I realised the puzzle was nowhere near as straightforward as I'd expected.

It took me ages to sort the corner in the bottom left, but I got there - eventually. I loved the clue to 10 Down.

As this was such a great puzzle, I'm bumping it up! I hope other solvers will tackle it.

I'm trying, I'm trying!

I printed it off yesterday and went steaming in filling in the answers. Then I hit the wall. I've printed off another blank grid and will give it further thought on the morrow. Intriguing.

This was like the Atlantic Monthly Cox and Rathvon- superb. I do have one blank, and must have done something wrong in the northeast corner; I just can't see 8d (but will no doubt kick myself).

Having entered all the answers that I had before realising that it wasn't that straightforward, I started again. I've solved nearly all the clues but can't see what to do next. I'm assuming that not all the entries in the final grid are real words. I'm tentatively entering the solutions, moving letters around to fit with crossers but can't yet see any pattern to this or a theme. Could you give me a nudge please without being too explicit?

You will end up with non-words, but there's logic to it. Have you spotted the stuff in the shaded areas?

Thanks. No, not yet. On my first pass (entering solutions as I solved them), I had gobbledygook. This time, I'm only entering solutions very tentatively. I think 19 starts with a 7 letter word which seems to be consistent with the title of the puzzle. My problem is what and where!
