I have U from 12a (see drxx's earlier post), W from 23a, W from 1a, A from 3d, M from 13d, R from 19d and S from 31d (haven't checked the parsing on last two though)

19d IS (R)ETWEE(T), not sure about 31d, is there a setter called PSY?

How is W extra in 1a ?I thought RUC was the ex-police??

I have the prison and the refuge and the 15 letters ....but can't see how to progress?
"the bottom row and left hand column ......" how ?

Think i'm on the right track now ...so to speak!!!!

Start in the square in the middle of the prison. Whatever the letter is in this square , draw a path along the row until you see this same letter in the bottom row.Then whatever letter you landed on , draw a line down the column until you see this letter in the left-hand column. Continue for 20 letters and you end up in the square in the middle of the refuge. The 20 letters are anagrams of the escapees.

This is so frustrating. Everything seems to work, but I have ended up with the letters nucyctir for the refuge. Could someone please put me out of my misery ?
