Hi aristo, I'm a tad surprised as I always see you "quod Magister" anyway many thanks to mattrom for parsing.
Hi stevea, having got as far as looking for "the ff" it never crossed your mind to have a peek in Chambers! It just goes to show we all solve differently and such diversity helps to make "cruciverbalism" so universally appealing and dare I say addictive.

Wow, what great clues. I could go on about all of them, but will only mention several favorite touches: kt’s “Sheherazade’s ruse”, fiery’s “execute the queen”, tyke’s “serial swinger”, Skyewalker’s inspired Heathcliff losing Cathy, bigbad’s thing to put one’s shirt on, mattrom’s excellent “chef flaring up”, paul’s wonderful “suspension bridge”, sunray’s “revolutionary Che”… OK, getting carried away. I think ginge has the whole package @12 with:

Ending up in the air after a slip outside, I made it to hospital (11)

I know you think less of me because of my lapse (not being able to find the missing puzzle piece), but it was late at night after a five-hour drive. Anyway, ignorance is no excuse, so you still win. Your prize (an oldie but goodie) may not really go with the standard definition of the word, although the editing makes it one I suppose. And...do they live happily ever after, or does our hero’s exposure to crop-dusting chemicals change his gender identity? And will there be a “North by Northwest 2”?

Thanks so much, all of you. It’s been a pleasure.

Congrats ginge. Thanks aristo.

Sorry, but I don't understand why ff should mean 'made it'. Hard as I try to find the answer on the internet, I only get fortissimo ... or a very rude meaning. (Don't own a Chambers.)

Chambers has ff: fecerunt (L), (they) did it or made it.

New to me, but happy to learn. Can someone provide a sample sentence (in English!) to exemplify its use?
