I see that nonpareil has a meaning in printing, so typography.

bobbycollins' hint that the point has just D requires looking at the grid again.

Bobbycollins, that has made me laugh! I suppose we've all got various bits and pieces of crossword knowledge, terminology stored in our brains - but we don't have them all. I remember being baffled by BRB for a while (Big Red Book, Chambers dictionary).
