Thank you again, Brendan.

I'm thinking ?e?e PETrel for 12a, and 3a looks like it should be an anagram?

Hi Jo,

I agree about the probable anagram at the 3d but have tried it in every anagram solver I can find, all to no avail.

12a I too thought PET is contained but as the first 3 letters of the first word, making it PETE, which I know sounds unlikely but there is another name in answer to 5a:-

What Dr Spooner did with his flag (4,4) - and the answer, again by Ratty and his Mum is DAVE WITT

This, coupled with 20a:-

Eg 5A, 12 etc. held back in carrot I'd eaten (6) - Answered as EDITOR by Ratty and Mum

I should mention, also, that the R and E in the 2nd word of 12a are seem correct. They were both answered by Ratty and Mum and the R comes from:-

23a Timely chip in Powerpoint extension (6) - PROMPT

and the E from:-

25a Deaf? Stay away for this anniversary (5,3) - FEAST DAY

Anyway, I think we've probably both spent enough time on this. and who knows, we might even hear from the aforementioned Ratty and Mum at some point!?

Hello Brendan,

Apologies for my tardiness.

Thank you very much for your help, I must say my mum was very excited when I told her that we had, had a reply to my thread. Your explanations were also very useful.

I haven't read through the last couple of posts yet as I'm currently away on a hiking trip but will see my mum tomorrow and will let you know if she's completed it yet, I'm not sure if the correct answers have been released yet.

Many thanks

Hi all, I know I'm late to the party but seeing the answers Dave Witt & Phil Rice seemingly undefined I googled them and The Malmesbury Jackdaw magazine header comes up with both names and Pete Clarke (albeit without the final "e") which parsed as pet +e + lark in ce.

I might be way off but if sphinx is spelt sphynx then 3d could be York- Moore the surname of someone else associated with the magazine but the header had it spelt as Yorke- Moore (this time with an extra "e") but I don't get home as York. Perhaps being a local puzzle ...

I've just noticed the preamble sentence, some related to 8 (answer The Jackdaw) ... which would seem to clarify matters.

3d shambles home = York, the shambles is a well-known Street in York + (or 'ome)*
