Hi Simon. Sounds like we're on the same page -- I vowed to give up on Everyman after last week's nonsense, but was lured back this morning as the brain needed a bit of exercise before a day on the couch watching the cricket, Great spot re the edges, but this seems yet another example of the pointless little games the setter includes to amuse him/himself. Meanwhile, some clues belong in a quick crossword while others are almost impossible to work out solely from the clue because there are too many options (for instance, 'actress' was the definition in one puzzle and the answer was only her surname!). Moreover, the wit that used to characterise Everyman has disappeared completely.

Hi Phil, exactly that. Currently watching and mightily relieved to see second wicket fall. Fingers crossed!

Watching cricket here, too ! A few loose clues this week and I was ignorant of the 'pen' although my dogs have met several 'wrinkly' pals in their walks.i

I got lucky with the dog clue. My friend has gone on holiday for 2 weeks and I'm looking after his dog, I don't know it's breed (i think it's a cross) but I know it's 2 single syllable words so Shar Pei came easily to mind.

I'm really enjoying reading the comments - for the first time in a while I don't feel out of step :-)

Brendan, glad your threads are coming up with discussions and feedback - and glad you're not out of step. I gave up looking at Everyman when the definitions got looser and looser (This Means War and Lie-In were particularly bad!)

Hi Malone, those 2 you mentioned were particularly bad. The "This Means War" clue was truly atrocious.

Anyway, must go - I've got a very excitable dog jumping all over me (even though he's been walked, watered and fed) and have no idea what he wants :-(
