Sounds like we're on the same page -- I vowed to give up on Everyman after last week's nonsense, but was lured back this morning as the brain needed a bit of exercise before a day on the couch watching the cricket, Great spot re the edges, but this seems yet another example of the pointless little games the setter includes to amuse him/himself. Meanwhile, some clues belong in a quick crossword while others are almost impossible to work out solely from the clue because there are too many options (for instance, 'actress' was the definition in one puzzle and the answer was only her surname!). Moreover, the wit that used to characterise Everyman has disappeared completely.
