Rosalind, I too was initially baffled by the sign on row 7 - then realised it was just 'cent'!

The cookies aren't ones that the Girl Scouts bake (heaven forbid) but ones that those relentless accosters sell to their cornered prey.

"Stop! Please stop! I'm begging you! I'll buy twelve boxes of Samoas! All right, all right! Twenty boxes!"

I had the medical word a bit wrong, aristo, sorry. I see it now. I hadn't realised the signs take the place of the letters in the word. Thank you for your help. I doubt I can do much more, but am going to continue trying.
Thank you malone, as well.

@ Aristo.

No kidding. They came to our office one time. A co-worker said, "No thanks," & one of the girls burst into tears !

Forget how many he bought.

Well, I enjoyed that crossword puzzle very much and completed it all up to the last... the signposted entry in row 2.

Like the 'Last Emperor' was forced to admit his guilt, I feel it incumbent on myself to lay myself bare.

I took it to be speech marks, and it drove me mad!

I thought the 'ditto' symbol was differently shaped, and not superscript...

I have put my foot through the stars and stripes and will be sending the bill to myself!

KT17, I had the same problem with the row 2 entry! I had everything else done, but that one sat empty for a full 24 hours. When I had another go at the question and another stare at the grid, it suddenly fell into place. I was not best pleased with myself - it seemed so straightforward afterwards!

It's odd, even though I need more help than most of you, I immediately thought the signpost in row 2 was "ditto", since there simply can't be a word with "speech marks" or "quotation marks" in, and it looked like a ditto sign to me. I also got some help from the WSJ responses section, which actually said which clue it was!
I still haven't got the first word in the last column, but otherwise finished. I think I'll give you lovely helpful people a rest and not try the Harpers, which looks even worse!

rosalind, I believe it is Sonora.
Child is son then or and then adult's first letter.

I would encourage you to do Harper's.
It is not tough at all.

Thank you sunray. I had the entry place for two clues mixed up.

Thank you for your encouragement, but I don't have the courage and also feel I have asked enough questions to get through the WSJ (also there are remarks on their puzzles, which generally help a lot).

What's it like in Chicago at the moment? My memories of going out are it was like being hit by a hot, wet blanket
