Thanks syzygy, quite a good workout and another "new" format. I had to Google (k) & (v) across to confirm parsing but hey it's an American publication so only to be expected. Liked the surfaces of (c), (L)* & (u) across and (q) down.

Not as daunting as it looks, and wonderful. Thanks so much.

ginge: I really liked many of the clues, but L across was the only one I starred.

Thanks as always, Syzygy, an engrossing puzzle.
I don't see the 'giant' part of v. across.

Thanks, Ginge! I did find the 'Girl Scout's cookies', however.

Thanks syzygy.
Nice work out.
I have bought only Thin Mints from Girl Scouts.
I knew the savory pastry right away but had to confirm the cookie's name.

The only thing remotely resembling cookies I baked as a GG began with d and needed the jam we put in them!
I looked at this and shuddered. I solved the easy anagram at i across, but there isn't a space for such a long word, or even with one letter less, anywhere in the grid. I know what Americans call the sign in row 6 and the first 6 letters from i are nearly the same. But I looked at the comments on the WSJ page and you have to think of various meanings for all the signs. No idea what the one on row 7 even is.

No word length or positions. Salutations to those who solved it

The answer to i across does go in row six. The first six letters aren't entered because the sign takes their place; the second six letters are. I'm quite sure we spell the word the same way, so I don't see why you say the first six letters are almost the same.
