Hi, I am stuck on one and it simple clue but just can't get it and can't see if I wrong with clues round about. Any help appreciated.

pretence?

Pretence would fit if the clue was Affectation.

I think "pretence" is okay here ....Chambers gives "affectation" as meaning "affection"

Chambers 13th has separate entry for affectation and does not mention affection.

affectation : assumption of a striving after an appearance of what is not natural or real; pretence
affected : full of affectation ; feigned
