Look under "affection" (noun):
"love; attachment; the act of influencing; emotion; disposition; inclination; affectation (Shakesp); an attribute or property; a disease; "

I see the Shakespearean definition, but that is archaic ? I still think it is a print error, but back to Glastonbury - David Attenborough on stage

So did Malone ! Grateful thanks to my pal in Glasgow.
It's a pity Smudgy did not respond, but often the OP disappears once the answer is given.

Cerasus, I think part of my thinking was based on the provenance of the clue! The Sunday Mail Seven Days puzzles were never particularly challenging when I occasionally saw them. If the clue had been in one of my more usual crosswords, I think it'd have said something like 'Bard's affection' if it featured the latter word.

Quite so, Malone. The archaic Shakespeare connection would suit The Listener . (One crossword I would not attempt !) It also has the meaning of being affected by disease . Pleased it has been sorted.
