Hi Biggus
The letters are not transferred between the normal clues. That’s what I thought at first, but I think the preamble is a bit misleading here. Some letters are lost and some are gained but they are not the same letters,.
Both sets spell out a phrase.

11a i have the answer but can't fully parse ...missing letter in "vin" ??

similarly with 16a

I can’t find the first E in the first word of the phrase. 9ac maybe but why? My other is from 11ac.

Thanks Ginge, I had “far behind” as ago but the “acting” was bothering me. All good now. Clever puzzle I thought.
