A fine work-out, and it must have been a nightmare to clue. I'm stuck with the African region, and would value a hint - I assume it's a proper name.

I agreem really enjoyed this and one of my puzzles of the year so far.
The African region is 4,8 both names synonymous with S.Africa.

Ah, yes, of course, stamps, stil have some somewhere from old African countries.

Stuck on final thematic...13a. I have REC?N? But nothing seems to fit the sequence. Denmark!?

I'm having trouble seeing the message and speaker. For example the last six normal clues seem to be 21, 22, 25, 27, 30 and 31. The first, second, etc letters of these give A E L I L I. What am I doing wrong?

tomsdad ... i think you are looking at the wrong sequence ....from clue 21d you need 2nd letter....from 22d you need 3rd letter etc...

.... you use the same sequence as the one you use to remove letters from the themed answers.........
