When my father used the term fly he meant artful.

I did swither about a ? OED has 'guns' as a definition of hardware, but perhaps 'rods' are a particular type of gun.
Thanks to Ginge and TR for the parsing. I was using 'fly' in the sense of 'knowing' (Chambers, slang)
Can I get a parse for TR's #22? I can see the dogs pursuing the hare.
I suspect I will have to sharpen my wits for next week.
