I suppose it might be ... if you changed the fourth letter of 6a. I think it's more elegant to use the k elsewhere in 8 - but it's possible the inspectors didn't notice the alternative.
I've finally managed to sort the north-east corner but.......I'm still totally perplexed by 33a. I can't even crack the original clue! What's more I fail to see how the 3 crossers can be further changed to leave a real word for the intersecting clues i.e. 26d, 16d and 21d. Please can some kind person give me a very big nudge?
Tintin,
I changed the 1sr letter of 26d/26a, 2nd of 16d. Last letter of 26d constitutes change for 33a, which, as others have already alluded to, isn't a good clue.
Yes, predictively, the penny finally dropped after I'd posted on here. I agree - not a good original clue and 33a changing to a word I've never heard of hadn't helped me. I was relieved to find it in Chambers!
I am struggling with the NE corner with this one.
In particular, 7D: One without hope to suffer a swelling endlessly (9)
I have (I think): ??V??N?B?E
Any help with parsing would be appreciated.
