Rick Wakeman was interviewed - maybe on Desert Island Discs? - and the story went that within a short time of his enrolling at the Royal College of Music - no mean feat even to get there - his tutor told him there wasn't much point his continuing his studies there, because he already had everything he needed, he was better off out of school following his star.

So he did. 'Life on Mars' and everything else followed soon on.
