Found this tougher than usual.
Still looking for answers to two 4 letter clues.

One at 10a and another at 27d.

Very nice puzzle. Thanks, syzzie.

sunray: For 10a, think of chess. For 27d, think of second as assistant.

I don't fully get the parse for 29a, or 22a. For the latter I see where the four letters come from, but not the significance of Olympics XXX.

Thanks, Syzygy - really enjoyed it. I'd have found it hard to get started without picking up a few tips from here.

You're welcome.

Kisses for me, Aristo ? I'm blushing.

I also don't quite get the wordplay in 29A.
Is it supposed be a shortened homophone for white brocolli ?
Or, the answer + "flower" = the vegetable?

Not crazy about 15A - common in the US, but the def lacked.
It's a company, not a state of matter ...
... nor 16D. Never heard of that person.
Hmm. According to Wiki, she is famous.
Yes, just confirmed - definitely not my cuppa.

Good workout. Clue of the week - 7D !

Caliph+flower sounds like Cauliflower.

Mary J Blige is a famous singer with many awards.

15a Is he trying to be funny?

A hug perhaps, syzzie; that's as far as I'll go.

You and sunray are surely right about 29a, but it's not quite a homophone, is it? Maybe where Mr. Maltby's from, but not in Boston, where we do speak a form of English. :)
