I'm finding it hard to solve the clues let alone hunting for the end game. For example I would expect 26d, "leaders of owls apparently welcome near" to be OAWN meaning cattle pen.

5 down gave me the way in. The solution, to me, was fairly obvious - not many words describing a "Knight" attacking windmills. Trouble was, I couldn't see the wordplay until I spotted a word at 25 across which would help me out. The word which then became redundant at 5 down was very useful at 4 down.

I've got the ones in columns 4 and 6, but 11 eludes me.

Ah, got it now. I had a wrong letter in an answer!

SOS! Where do the birds begin in columns 6 and 11, please?

6th column 5th cell, 11th column 3rd cell.

I managed to complete this and find the birds without consulting the thread; I have submitted. This is the first time in a while. A very satisfactory puzzle.
And Wales beat England on Saturday!
