Thanks Prospero....worked out the first bit thanks to judy, I printed this off in the wee hours and my clue for 25A starts... 7's 24 18 15 rather than 7's 24 1 8 15 just to warn others that may have done the same....so I now see where the final missing letter comes from!

Think we must have the same answer for 5D for it to work as the anagrind for 17A....I can't quite see your parsing.

To clarify my parsing of 5d......Worn out is the defn, 6 letter synonym for "lively" (which can broken into two words) which when cycling (first two letters moving to the back of the first four) gives the answer, hopefully, because I've already submitted the thing!

I've got a word which, working from the inside out, parses as

abbreviation for numbers + in, inside a letter (or, more commonly, a river), with an A at the front?

Does this fit with the consensus?

I've almost finished it now, although I'm not 100% convinced my 26A is correct (a synonym for opinions?). But I cannot sort out 1D and 9A, despite prospero's "Turn backwards." Is it the word for turn reversed, or to turn backwards? Any hints please ...
