Thanks, murky. As usual, the wrong tree was being barked up. I now have two of the things to be highlighted, but the third presumably requires the solving of the third of the Bs. (So far, the PDMs are very satisfying.)

I'm glad these blasted traffic lights have become superfluous, redundant, otiose ...

cockie - indeed the last one does require solving the third B. Hint - screens is used as a verb.

I've almost filled the grid but still have two to get (and five that I can't quite see the wording/parsing which I'll worry about later). So, I'd appreciate hints but nothing too explicit please.

24a - I have the first 3 letters but can't see a word that would fit the clue.

42 - I have all the crossers but, again, can't see a word that fits the clue.

Thanks

Hi, simond9x,

24ac: if you have the first three letters, you are just missing the unchecked letter. In the clue, “piece” refers to a coin. This coin is still in common use, and you need an Elizabethan spelling. Look for an 8-letter word meaning “sorry”, and remove the last four letters, which give you a type of wine.

In 42ac, “piece” gives a word that you could use to refer to a piece of cake or a piece of pie. This is surrounding K for king, and the final letter is an abbreviation for a Latin word meaning “take”. The definition is “rook”.

Hope this helps.

Hi wintonian. Thanks for the help, got them now. I had actually got the 3rd letter of 24a wrong (I used the letter five further on in the alphabet). 19d was one of the ones I couldn't fully parse although I was happy with the definition. I can see it now.

Cheers.

Hi, cloverjo,

No,it isn’t G. For 1dn, the police inspector was one of Sherlock Holmes’s colleagues, and you have to move “the French” down.

I found the answer to 1ac only after consulting Bradford. The first three letters are a language, and a group of people, in Ghana, and the last four letters are what comes before an act.
