Why is it that I have to repeatedly spend more time looking at completed grids than completing the damn things in the first place!! I have both A and B answers fitting nicely into the grid. I can see what must be one of the individuals we are looking for, but as for the other and the chronicler + those who suffered the same fate - not a clue. More grid staring required.

I'm pleased to say that everything has now become absolutely clear. I have both perpetrators, the chronicler and transformation. I hope Paddock forgives my earlier bout of tetchiness.

Well done Gitto on getting that far. I was pleased to have at least filled the initial grid. Please can you help wth the group a clues?

Gitto - I have got everything except one of those responsible, whom I can't see. Almost correct using the first two letters of the answer to the last b clue, but misspelt. Help would be appreciated.
Fgsltw -
Bradford is helpful for all three
A1 starts with a two letter Roman coin
A2 main part is like rocked
A3 obvious first letter - see Bradford for answer

I don't think much grid staring is needed, just enough to see where the the extra answers can go, still forming real words. The setter has been very kind to solvers in that respect.

Group A clues are fairly straightforward. The first one is a non-standard plural meaning banks. For the second, Bradford's lists the word for 'swaggered', and the definition for the third is in the last two words.

There are two possible answers for 31. Trust me to see the wrong one first and get into a real muddle.

Wakeling, there's an alternative name to the character I think you have in mind.

Murky - just found it - thanks. A nice puzzle overall, with a neat transformation I thought.

Grid all filled by 5.45. Then - as usual - the wall (can it be because that's when I open the wine bottle?). A clues as straightforward as the main ones: got them in all right by bedtime. B clues are buggers though. Got the middle one, which rather spoils my idea for the first. I'm due to open today's bottle a bit sooner than yesterday's - c'mon, it's Saturday - so a gentle nudge for the other two would help.

I found the first B clue difficult as there is no cryptic indication. It is simply a colour (begins with P), the last is included in the clue
