Is the the template the first paragraph of the rubric? Or something else? I’ve written everything I can think of in groups of 13 and see nothing

Think I've gone wrong with either:

11a the Greek hero, in which I'm convinced champion denotes ACE, so have ACEASTUS , but unsure why AUS is seen

or 3d US Bimbo, for which I have TOOTSIE, but why OOTS is a signal baffles me.

Can anyone help me out of my confusion please?

I’m still slogging away at clues despite having the theme. Please can someone help me with 6a, 11a17a and 18a?
Thanks.

Morning jazzlover, yep it is a Greek hero but ace goes around a word for mount (ie a small one) then take it from there

Morning Bazatto, thanks so much.

Your wink gave me 3dn, at last. It's not quite twinkle, it's Twinkie.

Thanks so much. The Greek hero is what I thought early on, but then incorrect bimbo made me discount him. Back on track now, hopefully!

Hi Candlestick, having formed a copy grid, examine cells of the original grid according to the whereabouts of certain cells in the copy grid. It is a form of coding as indicated by the theme word.

Jazzlover42, 11a Wrong hero, this one had a problem with his heel. 3d as Bazotto suggests...

Hi Fgsltw, 6 : R(epublican), acts, with is in; 11a : starts of words - an architectural feature, also the name of a place where Zeno would speak at; 17a is abbreviation of the old term for a system of wrights and measures. French to have; 18a : Name of Austrian oil painter, exploit as in drink obtained from cows

fgsltw you still awake? 6 is Republican + St.Luke'so 2nd book around 'is'. 11 I've tried to explain above.17 is shortened for me of another word for Imperial measures I think, 1st year French 'to be seen'. 18 is difficult to explain so put Sir around fifty-one for entry and 'm' is the extra letter

Hi fgsitw - 11a has already been covered here. 6a common word for particular type of bigots (in v common usage). 18a is fairly well known Austrian oil painter, 17a French verb (incidentally) and first half of weight system (also an abbrev. of it. Hope that helps nudge.
