This looks fun but having only solved the bottom half of the grid and ground to a halt, I’m eager for nudges to get me moving again. Can anyone help with 1d, 2d, 3d for starters?!

Id: sauce listed in Bradford's. Four-letter word meaning to be approved + preposition that equals 'in' + A(merica)

2d - think where a stevedore works, which hopefully will give you a synonym; knock off first letter and you have an Ozzie word for uncultured, boorish.

3d - Def. at the beginning. Relationship is TIE. Ignore 'a' which is superfluous. Word for signal in TIE.

It's quite a tough puzzle, especially the NE

Haven't started, but have looked and am pretty sure:

2d is a 6 letter word for a stevedore (beginning d) with the d dropped.

I agree it's quite tough. Having got the online version yesterday afternoon I plugged away at it. This morning I checked the brilliant ideas that came to me overnight to find I was completely wrong on them all. I eventually managed to fill the grid and got the theme and instruction but have no idea how to put it into practice. Staring practice at the moment.

I'm exactly where you are, wakeling. I hope for inspiration brought on by the feeling of superiority of having done The Big Shopping very early this morning. But so far … zilch. Ah well.

What exactly is meant by the second word of the instruction isn't very clear to me. While I know roughly what I'm looking for, so far I haven't found anything like it.

Middle 9 letters of row 7. Don't think its part of the solution but cannot be a coincidence.

Possibly not a direct connection with the theme, unless I have done something very wrong, woodlouse. Harribobs is not a fan, one assumes.
