Drxx, I always plan to be more methodical if I've to look for more than one 'something' (misprints, dropped letters, added letters)… it never happens! One day...

I finally have a completed grid. I did not worry about which had extra letters and which were using the vehicles. (I still have cab, truck, carriage, camper unused).

So I do not have the 14 clues whose first letters are needed to come up with three names and the thematic figure.

I see LADY as the last name but it could be wrong.

I need some hints on the end game.

The extra letters give an invention that Malone hinted at very strongly earlier. If you google the inventor and use his names as surnames you will find some very famous first names in the initial letters clues

Sunray, I didn't get all the vehicles or all the extra letters - but I'd have persevered if I needed them for the end-game itself! I'm sure all the hints will help you get the three names and the thematic figure.

Hi, drxx, thanks for reminding me about the preamble saying 6d was in the OED (which I don't have either).

The clues I consider normal (ish) now are:

Across: 18 21 34 37
Down: 3 5 8 13 15 17 and maybe 22

Jazzlover, glad I gave you the correct information about 6 D! There's a normal clue before the start of your list. There's also one between your 5 and 8 Down. 22 is in the list, and there's another one after that.
