O.K. Got 27A. Never heard of him!

For 9, 'metal disc's picked up', the 'picked up' = sounds like. The entry sounds like a certain kind of metal disc.

27 Was slightly unfair - it's a very old tennis champ! The 'notice' is a four-letter word, one of the usual three-letter words for 'study' and a three-letter word, abbreviation for 'books' (the last gets reversed, as it's 'around'). I hope this makes sense and helpps!

I'm a bit (a lot) bemused by this, still. I think I've solved most of the clues, but when I do the necessary with the 8a/9a, my answers all come out one letter short. Can anybody guide me out of this impossible impasse, please?

Yes, I've just seen that, as I ran through the posts again, in search of (yet) more inspiration. I must have been so flummoxed then that I missed it. (I'm still a bit flummoxed, but I'm making (very) slow progress. Don't go away, I might be back for more assistance.

I'm still stumped on two 26a and 23d, both of which. by my (possibly faulty reckoning) need the 8/9 across treatment. Can anybody offer any assistance, please?
