My guess on 10d begins with L. 9d with L also.

the anagram gives the other 1a sunray. Your D????R is for the other entry...
yes one of the 9d's starts with L as does one of the 10 d's so that gives you the last 2 letters for the 1a entry that you need the anagram of...

I've got R for that, Lumen.

I solved just about all the clues and have two nearly completed grids but although I've got the crucial top row and 12a, I cannot work out which grids to put the lower answers, such as 36d or 32d and 31a. I suppose it would help if I could spot the 28 cells to highlight.

the 28 cells to highlight are the whole of 1a , 12a + 10 more

look at each 1a + 12a ....think of a 10 letter word that goes with each pairing. the 10 letter words are formed from the "other" pairs of letters eg the 2 at the end of the 26a's , the 2 from the beg of the 19d's , etc

ignore post 28 ....looking at 23d not 22d ....2nd letter is indeed R

lumen, I have a 5 letter word for decision, (Probably French word) with S inside and 2 letters for troops.
I hope I am correct. Because I cannot find Custodian def anywhere.
