I am really struggling with 2 and 3 down.
I have I?ANNA for 2 and C?M?ANI? for 3. Have I got something wrong as I have no idea what fits in.

3 D. Your letters are correct. The first four will give you a crossword word for 'affected', then a three-letter word for tales/gossip has Italy put inside. The resulting word is an area of Italy.

Thanks Malone.
By the way can anyone confirm the spicy dish not in Chambers - NEM TAI. I couldn’t find any reference to it.

Hi included, yes.
2d is partial &lit; if you Google the 1st part of the clue re Greek mythology you'll get the 2 letter name then Chambers pie 5th definition.

That was the one that held me up for a long time - I think that clue is a bit weak as the link between Io and a cow is a little obscure. Other than that I thought this was a fabulously constructed grid and yet another great puzzle - another POTY contender. I hope to hell I don't have a full year this time as marking the 2018 crop would be a bugger!

Good luck s! I only do these puzzles to keep the brain active in my advancing years. I’ve finished it now so will try the IQ which looks much tougher than this one.

Can someone explain the wordplay that gives NEWFOUND at 39, I can see the EW bit and the fund for finance but what about the rest? Thanks.

Hi Unclued. WEN for city is reversed (East-West), FUND for finance, with an O(round) in.
