1dn is said to have 5 letters and the answer has 5. But the space is 6! Are we not downsizing rather than upsizing? confusd.com

Rosalind, that's a thematic answer - and there's a few more, I think. There's more than one way to downsize!

Syzygy, thanks for this. It wasn't the finest from Emily and Henry, but quite good fun. (And for once, I don't seem to have stumbled over any Americanisms!)

You're welcome. My, you are quick!
Really boggled me when 1D conflicted with the Across answers, but then I saw the synonym.
Wasn't the full picture though until 14A.
Yeah it was fun, but a bit more challenge would be appreciated.

Rosalind, try to get the shaded squares. They are a good hint.

Rosalind, I grasped the theme when I tried to enter 14 A - then a couple of crossing letters showed me the way to the entry. I then took another look at answers that wouldn't fit - 12 D was helpful.

I got there the same way.
I had original word for 14a.
But I also had 1a,11a, and 17a.
So 1d entry became clear.

23d could be a little difficult for those who do not follow US's favorite summer game.

This was a little too easy.
