Stevea, Rusty, thanks for trying. The answer involves a 'take' that was new to me (when it appeared in last week's Spectator puzzle'. The 'detailed' might be a bit iffy, but I think I've seen instances of it before.

Yes, Cerasus - you've broken the Record!

Rec = take, it's in Chambers. I mentioned this being in a Spectator puzzle, but remembered later that it was actually a Sunday Telegraph EV. The 'detailed' = chopping the end off usually means removing the last letter, but I've seen it being used to take off more than one. It caused a little bit of debate on a crossword site, similar to a debate about 'endless' meaning either the very end of a word, or the start and beginning of a word (ie both ends).

Hope this wasn't a pest of a clue!
