Thank you. Yes, I though of that but Eliot seems to be a Greek, not an Irish name. Maybe I didn’t look far enough on the internet.

Ignore me! It wasn’t an Irish one.

It's OK, teenieleek. Hunting down all the Irish names was bad enough, without adding more!

If I could just chime in...

A short way into the puzzle I thought, "Do I really want to finish this?" But, like the gambling addict who thinks of enormous loss as an investment in the enterprise, I plodded along. I had a few blanks at the end, but the ever-helpful syzzie clued me in. The next time I find myself asking that question I think I'll be more open to cutting my losses.

Well put, Aristo. My sentiments exactly ... early on, but continued with the grind.

To finish; 33d Some French tribe (6) ?e?la?
It could be an undefined Irish name. Or not!

I have just joined the firum so hello. I don’t know if this has been resolved yet but I have the answer to 12 across as Dervla, another name of zirish origin.
Can anyone help with unclued 22 down. My final gap and I’m stymied.
