I see that it isn't in my Chambers, but it was floating around in my vocabulary, doing a breaststroke toward the center. It's definitely a legitimate word- an adjective in Latin but indeed used as a noun.

Ah cheers Mr A! It was the 'would-be' that misled me, thinking that gave the BE of BEatha. Very clever!
