Very late starting this EV and am struggling with the NE corner, have a good spread of across clues (even though the missing words are not speaking to me) but a lack of down solves have left me short of letters to even make sense of thedowns, nor have I cracked the preamble. Hefty hints would be welcome.

Thank you Malone, Have managed a few more thanks to a train journey but 5,6 & 10 down are being difficult. I have 4 of the anagrams and am presuming 30d. Although I have answers that fit in 29a & d, 31d I can't parse them. Will persevere because this week's EV as that currently means ...not a thing!

5 D. Things to torture Democrat in river (6). The river is sacred to Indians, swap one letter for D(emocrat) (the removed letter is the 'single additional ltter given by wordplay). The answer is the plural of an instrument of torture.

10 Secure inmate's yard (4) The definition is secure, comfortable - so Cosy. It's from Con's Y(ard), dropping the N as per the preamble.
