Hello phantom - 'thick' is a synonym of 'midst' in the phrase 'in the ..... of'. It took me a while to get that one too. There are several very devious clues, some of which I think don't really hang together (eg 'large part of opening lines': what part does 'of opening' play?).

Chambers gives 'the midst' in the entry for 'thick'.

saoralba - I didn't have a problem with 'large part of' STAR(T) = 'opening' - perhaps I've misunderstood the point you're making.

All done. It took me a depressingly long time to get the point of the quote and connect d and p.

Martyn, and others, just to add to the resources already mentioned, I also use the Chambers Crossword Dictionary. Much of the time I find it more useful than Bradford's because the synonyms are listed according to word length, making it far easier to select likely candidates from long lists.

I've finished except for 27a: Go over to embrace one former slave (5).

I have RE?L so REAL or REEL should be the entry (assuming my letters are correct). But adding a D seems to yield nothing.

simond9x,

38a - what can help you to get high literally?
26d - Shakespeare play, someone called Page involved.
32d - M = mark. Boar becomes board.

Orson - re 27a, not REAL or REEL. There is another word that would work
