Almost completed the grid thanks to the hints from everybody - thanks all.
Like orson (post #38), still stuck on 27ac: 'Go over to embrace one former slave' (5).
I have RO?L (I know - one letter missing lol!). Presumably there's a thematic letter D added to the clue and removed from the grid entry.
Any help gratefully received - I'm having a senior moment!

Hi Gazzar, I've got ROIL as the entry. The added D makes wordplay of God (LORD) over to embrace one. DROIL is an old version of toil.

Hello all. I’m new to the Listener - this is only my third time attempting it - so still very much trying to get my head round the conventions etc. Andway, I’ve completed the grid but I’m puzzled by 8d. The grid has 8 spaces but the clue states 9, suggesting it is thematic, but for the life of me I can’t see what’s happening. I have an 8-letter word (and am pretty confident it’s correct) but it has no thematic letter. Am I missing something? Many thanks.
