I have stared at this for a very long time and still haven't got a clue what the preamble's 'helping' me to discover.

I hope it's worth the effort.

You need to find synonyms of the solutions to those nine clues. They form a group of eleven when added to the two unclued entries (sadly lacking)

Thank you Pegster - I've been trying that approach for quite a while, but at least I can stop chasing my other options now.
I was thinking the synonyms might function like those used in another ranunculus puzzle leading to the 7 dwarfs (I was looking for a family of rabbits specifically) is it a similar treatment?
Any further hints to narrow the range of possibilities would be greatly appreciated.

A family (or some families) is definitely the way to go. The two central columns, including the letter between them will give two thematic elements, plus some words referencing lacking.

You could be making the same mistake I made novice, I was looking for something specific but there are lots more examples in this set.
pegster got me thinking of families rather than just a single family, and the confirmation of what to look for in the middle column helped a lot (I'd seen something there already but shouldn't have bothered finding a synonym for it) add a 'mr' and google should do the rest.
