Jockie, the duo wasn't one that sprang to mind for me . I've never heard of one of them, the other has strong links to Mr S. Holmes' address. Hope this helps... let me know if it doesn't!

Take a similarly placed letter from each 6/7 letter clues to spell them out.
And the title of the puzzle is a (weak) cryptic clue to the band too.

Thanks, malone and bunty. I feel Bruckner symphonies coming closer and closer ...

I have to admit it was a clever puzzle, but I would have preferred less circular giving of hints by Ifor. Once you have the song the location of the 20 letters is obvious, but in order to get the song you have to know where the 20 letters are. Give me a Playfair any day!

As usual I've not attempted this Inquisitor but I have followed the hints on here and (with google's help) guessed at the two entertainers (neither of whom I have ever heard of).

There is a philosophical question here. Should crosswords - including ones like these which are intended to be particularly challenging - appeal to a shared body of knowledge, or is it legitimate for setters to ask solvers to guess at their private demons?

If the latter then perhaps Bruckner key signatures are a bit obvious. How about a puzzle which cannot be solved unless you know who was the foreman of a particular (but unspecified) Morris side in 1925?

Absurd? I agree. But where do you draw the line?

What a horrible ambiguous ending. I can interpret things two different ways and put various answers on the LHS or RHS depending on that interpretation. Unless I've missed a confirmatory feature somewhere, which is very possible of course...

Any help with - what improves nap? One gram in a little quantity of liquid.
Thanks

Jadzia, it's a seven-letter word, beginning with G. The 'nap' refers to the pile on fabrics. There's 'one gram' inside a four letter measurement/little quantity of liquid.

Verlaine, I initially thought there was an ambiguous ending, but Chambers helped me. Two of the words that have options for placement are defined as something specific, so I put those on one side. Two others (loosely) fit what the song says, so they went on the other.
