Flummoxed, I also put in STEM for 30A. A bit tenuous but, taking "scan" as "recite metrically", "stock" is a homophone of "stalk". Doubtful.
If they are still awarding a T-shirt as a prize, why are they no longer asking what size you would like if you win? My bet is they have boxes and boxes of unrequested small ones gathering dust, and that's what you'll get even if you're the size of a house.

Could this be another wrong number. Could be 24a - stay - stem - stock all same meaning

You may be right, Ian. I think they have possibly recently employed a number-blind compositor for the crosswords. It would be in keeping with the dyslexia now appearing in some of the headlines. We've recently had "Chocs away" which was nothing to do with chocolate, Oxfam workers facing "clams" of sexual misconduct and, yesterday, Craig Brown's piece on Sir Alex Ferguson's plight (Page 5) where the man is allegedly "The greatest manager on the plant".

Maybe they are getting old and tired like me.
I have a number of T shirts I was thinking of using to raise some money for Strathcarron Hospice. Do you think that is a good idea?

Ian,
One of the guys I am friendly with in our local used to offer me money (as far as I remember, he went up to 50 quid at one point), for one and I was always of the mind that they had to be earned and couldn't be bought. Eventually, long after he had given up, I became less dogmatic, thought "What the hell?" and gave him one free gratis. My wife swears she saw tears in his eyes. He enjoys wearing it, especially when he meets his neighbour who is Glasgow's Director of Education. She looks at him, looks at the T-shirt, then back at him with an expression of consternation.?

I can't remember the last time I wore one of mine, so they're doing no-one any good. If you can help a good cause with yours then well done. Let me know how you get on.

My achievement was winning the t-shirt. A pal of mine has one for every day of the week. My daughter has a couple for night shirts & I kept 3 or so for myself.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, I won my first T-shirt. My dearly beloved saw fit to wash it along with one of her dresses which was a fetching shade of purple. Suffice it to say, said T-shirt came out of the wash a lovely lilac colour. I think it had also shrunk. One of my work colleagues relayed this tale of woe to her husband, who had already won more than one. He kindly gave me a replacement.

When the Herald was still the Glasgow Herald, at one point they were selling "I can't do the Wee Stinker" T-shirts , with the grid on the front all crumpled up and the clues on the back adulterated as if by some frustrated solver. I bought one for my wife as a joke. She still has it somewhere.

Hi there, I’m also looking for a copy of last week’s WS as I couldn’t get a Herald. :(
