Therogue, the clues look similar but surface reading is different -

Hi folks, I've just looked in and the ingenuity on display is genuinely astounding, so much so in a couple of cases (that I'll expand on later) they would probably only be found in higher grade thematic puzzles but I'd like to clarify a couple of points and anyone feel free to comment.

heathcliffe @ 6 I get Freeman = Hospital (in Newcastle) and I'm assuming it's (c)ity but I can't see a reference to c = conditions.

paul @ 13 I'm assuming til is being used as "to" (a positional additive indicator) and should be 'til. I'll assume it has the apostrophe, unless you parse differently as I wouldn't want any controversy.

There may well have been only 9 setters but I have had as much, if not more, difficulty (and pleasure) than when there were more entries and contributors.

Some great straight anagrams from chrise, skyewalker, pigale, paul and therogue, dorrien's subtractive & replacement, heathcliffe's impressive knowledge and use of English hospitals. Lovely touches include fiery's hop & Hoy, skyewalker's true, yes, mine with me and pigale's shopping in Italy (Milan I presume).

My shortlist includes heathcliffe 3, paul 13, skyewalker 15 and pigale 21. Two I alluded to earlier that just miss out are BBM2's use of &lit and therogue's Hit (H + it, particularly with Hit the first word to give the capital) but as I mentioned both possibly beyond the scope of a standard cryptic puzzle. Regardless, my winner is skyewalker 17 which combines a great surface with clever wordplay

Son left a pair of boxers on prostitute's bed for entertainment

With most local pubs disappearing as a result of the rise of the faceless, impersonal chains such as Wetherspoons (even in Glasgow), hospitality as provided by my local is all too rare nowadays
