It's good it was resolved....Had it been me I think I would have 'Thrown the towel in' on the basis of 'Life's too short'...

I certainly would have done without the clarification provided here ! Shame the editors didn't tweak the preamble's wording really, it would have been so easy to make it completely clear what was intended.

i'm with you on that Crosswhit99, only when i decided that it was going to be impossible did i try the intended interpretation. Mind i made one error, and ended up with sex instead of six.

Thanks chrisity, perhaps the following wording would have made it clearer what was intended;

Every clue shares letters with its answer, and taking the letter immediately before the first of these in each clue ...
