Struggling today. Any help with 'so voice activation system unnecessary' obviously.

It's a rather tenuous double definition, as far as I can see. "Obviously" is the second one.

btw I'm slightly miffed. I had a lovely answer for 1a that turned out to be wrong!
Found behind its initial: "lion", perhaps, in dictionary (7)
I had LEXICON (L EX ICON) until crossers proved it wrong (I have the correct answer, thanks). Nearly perfect, apart from the unaccounted "in"...

Thanks Chris but still can't parse it. I'll try to get some more others first.

Finished but I would appreciate a clue about the parsing of the solution (which seems fairly obvious) to12A - One might be beaten in the ring, losing always in the end (3).

BTW, isn’t the”in” used in connection with the OED in 1A?

On the parsing of yours, Barney, isn’t it just a double definition?

Thanks, Xwordfan. That will teach me to try to take “ever” off a non-existent word!

Yes, cymro, "in" works fine with the correct answer, not so well with "lexicon".
